He is okay, but his grading style is so subjective. I honesty believe he grades everyone test differently.

The horror stories about Dr. Thorne are mostly true. However, you have to push that aside and give the guy a chance. At the beginning of the semester, he enraged me so much that I could not concentrate in class. But, I just let it go and found that he has a good heart, he's a great teacher, and he wants you to do well. I failed a test horribly, but made an 87 on the next one and he congratulated me on my improvement... it really meant a lot to me... Dr. Thorne IS a jerk, it's true, but you have to look past that and get to know him and you will like him. His tests are hard, but if you go to class and work along with him and do practice problems, you have it in the bag.

this guy is realy nice, but i didnt appreciate some of his humor. very boring class, but it is math!
his tests were very easy and he goes through material SO sLOWLY its almost a joke.
tests are easy, and you can retake any or all to get a better grade. (thats the ""final"") i like that he gives you second chance.
plus all quizes are extra credit! and dont count against you.

alright...first..dr. thorne is a FUNNY man and very smart...second...he's retired for a reason (but still teaching)....he tells great stories and talk to him about scrubs and ur good to go! :) for the class tho, his tests are EXTREMELY HARD....most of fill in the blank with big words and he counts off for spelling...sucked for me...he does give extra credit quizzes but they can also be difficult...he's notes arent very organized and rambles VERY VERY much....i quit going after the half of the semester b/c i got so discouraged and frustrated...rumor has it he does drop the lowest test grade but doesnt tell you until the end of the class that he'll do this! dr. klein is MUCH easier than thorne..although thorne is more interesting...i guess hah!

Before I started this class I was extremly terrified of Dr. Thorne because of the horror stories that were on this site. After having him all semester, I must say everyone on here was terribly wrong. Dr. Thorne is hand's down the absolute best teacher I have had my entire time at MSU. He is like a walking encyclopedia. The man knows his stuff and he wants you to know it as well! He has a wonderful sense of humor and he is a really nice man. I loved the class. You really have to work hard and study hard, it is not a breeze. If he was teaching any more classes I would sign up under him in a heartbeat! Dr. Thorne gets an A+++ in my book!!

Having to take Dr. Thorne's classes was the worst experience I had while at MSU. I got my psycology degree in 2000 and ended in his Stats and History of Psych. classes. Avoid them at all cost. I have to say that he is a very knowledgable and I actually learned a lot from him, but he was the biggest jerk I have encountered in my entire 23 years. He was rude to me and others every chance that he got. One lady was about 45 years old in our stats class, and he had the nerve to ask her in a rude manner what in the world she was doing in college!!! She was shocked by him attitude, as we all were. Though I received an A in his stats class and a B in his history class, I would not have chosen to take him ever again. At the end of the semester I had 369.5 points. In order to get exempt from the final I needed 370, he made me take the darn final!!!

They made a A+ in the class.
I just had Dr. Thorne this semester for stats, and it is hard for me to comprehend how anyone could not pass his class or like him. Perhaps the people that have critiqued, did not want to put forth any effort. He is extremely fair, he gives you a computational equation sheet for every exam in the class. He also provides the opportunity to earn atleast 20 extra credit points during the semester. If you attend his lecture, pay attention, and review your notes, you will undoubtedly have an A in the course. Dr. Thorne has his own sense of humor, but don't judge his teaching ability by that. Dr. Micheal Thorne is definately the best mathematics teacher at MSU, and the best math teacher I have ever had.

Dr. Thorne is a good teacher, but he is a little rude and has a dark sense of humor. Yes, he does like making jokes at the expense of students, and yes, he does like to humiliate people who he deems to be taking the class anything less than seriously. He grades tough, but fair, and does make an attempt to give you a little extra credit. His personality, however, is one that doesn't click with a lot of people. If you are easily offended, stay away from his class. If you can sit there and learn, not take anything he says personally, and prepare for tests, you'll do fine.

This teacher is very knowledgeable of the subject( he wrote the book)and is a somewhat good teacher. However, he is not very easy to talk to and makes you feel stupid if you do not understand something. He also makes fun of students in class even if they are not there. His tests are hard and require a lot of studying. His tests are mostly fill in the blank and working problems. One problem of his tests is that one problem is worth 50 points so if you miss it you are screwed. I would reccomend taking someone else if you can.

Dr. Thorne is one of the best psych teachers here at State, and is the BEST stats teacher I've had here. His lectures prepare you not only for the tests, but for the actual statistics you're going to use in graduate school and on research projects (if you're planning on getting into grad school, you're going to be glad you took him). If you don't do well in his class, it's because you didn't come or didn't study, period. After all, getting an A for effort went out of style in high school.

I did incredibly horrible in this class, the only D I have ever gotten. The tests are all problems that you must work out, one problem usually being worth at least 50 points. It there is any other statistics class to take it, avoid this one.

Dr. Thorne is a good teacher that is often misunderstood as being rude and/or inconsiderate.I agree with a previous student who stated he has his own sense of humor; sometimes he is very hard to take, but you will find it much easier if you laugh and take him with a grain of salt.
As for being an instructor he is pretty goood, but he is very disorganized, especially in History of Psych. He has A LOT of stories for each person and very minute details that you are expected to remember for the tests. His tests are a little tricky but they are doable--somewhat. The main thing is to remember the little details and keep the book handy while studying.
All in all Dr. Thorne is a funny man but you will have to concentrate and be able to decipher what is important and what is not.

They made a B in the class.
Michael Thorne is the rudest, most unfair teacher I have ever had. Although I feel he is very knowledgeable on his subject matter, having to go to his class is a chore. He belittles students every chance he gets. It seems as though he prides himself on humiliating others. I do not recommend him as a teacher. I worked very hard in his class and feel as though I deserved an A, and I'm sure I was only one point away from it if that much. I brought a doctor's excuse for the one absence I had, and he wouldn't even consider it. This man loves making people miserable. Avoid him if you can.

He is the worst teacher I have ever had not just because he grades hard but because he is not very personable. He is extremely rude and whenever you ask him a question he looks at you like you are the stupidest person in the world. I took him for History of Psychology and started out in his Psychological Statistics class but had to drop it because I could't tolerate him. I would definitely not reccomend any one taking him.

I love Dr. Thorne! He is so funny and he seems really interested in the material he teaches. Don't take this class if you aren't a serious student, because it is challenging, but it's really worth it if you are willing to come to class and study.
