I have mixed feelings. She IS a decent teacher and I would recommend her, but be mindful: How much she likes you is 50% of your grade. Pros: She is very nice and she lays out basic requirements on what you have to do to get an A. She usually gives feedback on papers and will help you if you approach her. There are a lot of writing assignments, but they aren't very long, and there are no tests/quizzes. You also don't have to buy any book until she tells you to. Cons: You have no barometer of how well you're doing in that class until you get your final grade. She doesn't grade individual papers, which I thought would be good at first, but it actually just leaves you clueless. The feedback she gives varies from person to person: Some got more feedback than the length of the paper they wrote, others, like me, never got anything besides a "great paper!" or a spelling correction. It's very difficult to know what you have to improve with that sort of feedback. She also grades based on "personal growth", so if you have a lot of difficulty with writing, she's very forgiving and very helpful; However, if you're a decent writer, you HAVE to impress her marginally better each week or you won't do well at all. She will forgive almost anything for charm and she does play favorites, but it's not difficult to be one of them. You can be disliked as quickly as you are liked, though. Personal note: If she says write 75 pages in your journal to get an A, MAKE SURE THERE ARE 75 PAGES. I wrote 75, but 2 or 3 pages fell out, so she wouldn't make my B+ an A- because of it. :/ |
