How to Know When You're Too Stressed at School

By Sydney Marsman on October 9, 2015

Are you constantly overwhelmed? Are you drinking coffee 24 hours a day? Have you realized that you don’t have time for the things you love anymore?

A little bit of stress is okay, good for you, actually. However, if you answered yes to all of the above questions, you are probably a little too stressed out for your own good. There are some people who pack their schedules full to the minute and run from one thing to the next, maximizing the ability of their bodies and minds. Are you one of these people? The thing about that is, your body and mind do not have the capacity to maintain the stress for that much activity.  As humans, we’re simply not meant to handle the stress we tend to put on ourselves. So, if you’re starting to suspect that you’re a little too stress out, I would recommend making a few changes in your lifestyle. I know it might be hard to do, but you simply cannot live your life to the fullest if you have too many things calling to your attention.

The first recommendation I would make for a stress addict at school is setting priorities. College (and life in general) is packed full of opportunities and new things, so one of the most important things to do is make a list of the top 3 or 5 things that are important to you in your life. Before you know it, you will start to get distracted by people and events and assignments that are due by midnight. This makes it easy to forget about the things that are most important to you. Therefore, its important to know what to set first in your life.

Secondly, I would set aside time each week to hang out by yourself. I understand the importance of girls’ night out and date nights and such, but in order to stay sane, I honestly believe that every person needs some honest time alone. Forget about your homework, your tests, your work, even turn off your phone if it’s necessary. Take a solid few hours, maybe even a whole night, just to appreciate some solitude and your favorite flavor of ice cream.

Lastly, if you’re really stressed at school, learn to be patient. College is definitely a time of learning and growing. One of the biggest things I’ve had to work on is patience (still an ongoing process), and a lot of that is thanks to the stress that I have experienced. However, there are ways to do this. For example, simply being organized can be a huge help for a person struggling with patience. If your life is neatly organized and planned out in binders/agendas then it will be much easier to take care of your responsibilities. My point is, a person is much more calm if they have learned to practice patience.

Stress is inevitable, especially in a college environment. However, there are ways to control it. Learn to love the things you do, and do the things you love. If you realize that this isn’t your reality, then you can make some changes.
