Ten Netflix Movies Worth Staying Home For

By Justin Japitana on September 26, 2015

Fridge full of food but nothing looks good to eat? Eh. Can’t choose an outfit for tonight’s outing in a closet full of expensive clothes? That’s pretty good, but nothing says first-world problems more than having a Netflix account and having nothing to watch.

Sure, us college students should count our blessings but in the words of Gene from the Fox series Bob’s Burgers (which is also available to stream on Netflix), “My life is more difficult than anyone else’s on the planet, and, yes, I’m including starving children, so don’t ask.”

In case you catch yourself in the weird alleyways of Netflix’s selections, here are ten movies worth staying home or probably in your bed for. You don’t have to watch all ten on the same day, but if you do, here’s to you.

1. The Skeleton Twins
This isn’t your ordinary siblings movie. The Skeleton Twins follows twins Milo and Maggie after many years of separation. After a failed suicide, Milo reunites with Maggie where they both confront their own problems; for Milo, it’s reuniting with a lover under uncomfortable circumstances and for Maggie, it’s confronting her fiancé who’s she not happy with.

2. In a World
Ever curious about the people doing the voiceovers in movie trailers? Well it’s a male-predominant work environment. In a World is about vocal coach Carol breaking the gender standard in voiceover actors and competing for a voiceover role in a big-budget film against her legendary voiceover actor father and his male rival.
3. Before I Disappear
A new twist in movies about an adult befriending a child. Lonely and suicidal Richie attempts to bond with his estranged 11-year old niece on a journey through New York City’s druggie yet intriguing nightlife.

4. Short Term 12
This movie guarantees to make its viewers feel introspective about their own lives. Twenty-something year old Grace works as a supervisor at a group home for at-risk teens while also attempting to confront her own history of being an at-risk teen.
5. Timer
An experimental romantic comedy, why not? In a world where timers are installed on people’s wrist to determine when they meet their soulmate, 30-year old Oona becomes concerned as her timer has yet to start while everyone around her is falling in love.

6. Chef
Everyone loves food trucks, so why not a feel-good comedy about food trucks? Famous chef Carl Casper leaves his position at a famous LA restaurant to search for the true reason he became a cook which involves him running his own food truck with his loyal best friend and underestimated son.
7. Up in the Air
Some dreams aren’t worth sacrificing everything for. Hired by various companies around the US, Ryan Bingham travels across the map to fire people companies are too scared to fire themselves. It is only until co-worker Natalie shows Ryan that there’s more to life than being alone and achieving his crazy dream of earning ten-million frequent flyer miles with American Airlines.

8. One Day
“Why won’t they fall in love?!” is what you’ll be yelling at your television during the entirety of this film. One Day follows the vastly different lives of best friends Dexter and Emma as they reunite every July 15 for the next 20 years with hopes of one day aligning into each other’s love-crossed gaze.
9. In Your Eyes
Imagine being able to see through the eyes of someone else and that person seeing through your eyes as well. Crazy love story right? Now imagine that special guy is a recently released convict from New Mexico and that special girl is a married and neglected housewife from New Hampshire. But as long as you can ship it, anything is possible.

10. The Kids Are All Right
This film challenges the notion of daddy issues. Joni and Laser are the children of same-sex parents Jules and Nic. When 18-year old Joni contacts the sperm bank to track her biological father, she and Laser are surprised to see their father lives a hippie and unconventional lifestyle.
